About Martino Motti

Yacht photographer by trade, digital artist by vocation: deep blue and the wild are my vital force.

Martino Motti

I was born in Milan in 1966 and Genoa has been my home for most of my life. My father was an industrialist from Mantua, my mother Milanese. Her family, the Savelli, trace their roots to medieval Rome and count two popes, Honorius III and Honorius IV; much later they joined the Monicelli family, and the film director Mario Monicelli was my great-uncle. I have always loved art and antiques, and I like to mix classical taste with modern contamination.

Since 2010 I have worked with art as a graphic language. My path starts from exploring the depths of the world’s most remote oceans and from meeting the creatures that live there. In the silence and solitude of that muffled world I find the ancient bond between human inadequacy and the perfection of nature. What lies deepest in us comes back to the surface and, through water, becomes an image: a symbol of inner peace.

The result I pursue respects the real shapes and colours of living beings and natural events, and reworks their uniqueness to hold on to its essence, in a positive and vital vision.

Why

From a twin-lens Rolleiflex in 1975 to today’s digital cameras, above and under water: technology alone did not make me a photographer. Open spaces, the sea and sailing, the magic of travel, curiosity for the new and the determination to get the result did.

Stories

I love using photography to tell stories of yachts, the sea, nature and tradition. Fate wanted me to be both a yacht photographer and a digital artist.

Critical review

“Photographically aimed at the marine habitat as a submerged, detached, primordial locus amoenus, Martino Motti probes it for spaces of pristine formation, where the single shot is the forerunner of a fantastic reworking built on the exponential multiplication of visual patterns.”
